| Perpetuating our global AIDS pandemic, gender inequality is killing women. Multiple forms of discrimination bar women from education and healthcare necessary to curb AIDS. Citing World Healthcare Organization statistics, Inés Alberdi of UNIFEM states, “AIDS is the leading killer of women of reproductive age in poor and middle-income countries.”* For many women around the world, economic empowerment is requisite to lessen AIDS’ impact. Such empowerment gives women greater access to prevention and treatment programs.
